The Eventual Island is an allegorical place suspended between summer holidays, winter depopulation and sea. After being a tourist on Elba Island for all his life, in the winter between 2019 and 2020 Giomi returned to the Island and lived there for an extended period of six months, trying to negotiate his vision built over the years and exploring the neglected and exploited spaces in it. Confronting the deepest frictions between space and place, Giomi tried to “abandon” the supposedly known touristic Island in order to “dwell” on a new one made by encounters with humans and materials. Through a set of methods including walking, photographing, filming and other participatory activities he experimented a new methodology for an expanded field-practice.
On a deserted beach some people find shelter, on the mountain a young boy repairs a drystone wall destroyed by a fire, a masked figure climbs over a locked gate to get some oranges from a closed hotel’s garden.
